CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION

In addition to its monthly technical meetings, IFMA offers periodic seminars designed primarily to further each member's professional knowledge and education in a particular area. Since January 1991, the monthly technical meetings and these additional sessions have qualified for credit under the US' Continuing Professional Education (CPE) or the UK's Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirement.

Every three years all US CPAs must now complete 120 hours of CPE credit (90 hours if not in public practice). This includes not less than 20 hours per year (15 hours p.a. if not in public practice).

Effective January 1992, UK Chartered Accountants must complete 105 hours of credit every three years. This includes not less than 35 hours of CPD each year, of which at least 14 hours per year must be spent on "structureD courses." Further information may be obtained from the Membership Department, The Chartered Association of Certified Accountants, 29 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London WC2A 3EE, telephone (+44 171) 244-6855.

IFMA seminars generally run from several hours to a full day and cost is minimal. CPE credit is based on the length of each session and in accordance with CPE guidelines established by AICPA; one CPE credit hour is given for each 50 minutes of a session. While most states waive the CPE requirement for CPAs residing outside the US, AICPA does not do so. Consequently IFMA technical meetings and seminars provide an additional opportunity for AICPA members to fulfill their CPE requirements.
